INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. —For soccer moms who think they can’t have nice things, a new home décor store here in Indianapolis begs to differ.

Her Home Design, a Black-owned design-build firm, opened its doors here earlier this month. It offers a curated mix of furniture, home décor and gifts with a focus on affordable luxury — and usability.

The 17,000 square-foot store allocates 5,000 square feet to a design studio, 2,000 square feet to warehouse space with two loading docks, and the remaining square footage to the retail store, which carries a wide range of products, including furniture from Coaster, Ashley, Caracole and Four Hands, rugs from Surya, and decorative accessories from Sagebrook Home, Noir and Global Views, among many others.

“We love performance fabrics. We love lines that make classic and timeless designs,” said founding principal Keianna Rae Harrison-Williams. “We’re talking to a soccer mom who doesn’t think she can have beautiful stuff in her home.”

Harrison-Williams is a big fan of performance fabrics that makes everyday living a little easier for families.

Her Home is in the Traders Point section of northwest Indianapolis, an area that used to be filled with home stores that have since closed due to the pandemic, Harrison-Williams said. Seeing a gap in the market and armed with a full A to Z assortment, she decided to give it a go.

The store may be new, but Harrison-Williams is not. Although she has a Master’s degree in applied behavioral science, a Ph.D. in sociology and a prior career in sports marketing, once she started experimenting with the home flipping business in 2009, she was hooked. She went back to school for interior design, and in 2016, left her full-time marketing job to open a home staging business called Her Home Design.

While staging homes, she often saw opportunities for improvement and recommended those upgrades to the seller. Eventually she decided to make the improvements herself and started working with contractors to offer home remodeling services. Her Home Design Build, a residential remodeling firm focused on building affordable kitchens and bathrooms, became a licensed contractor in 2019 by Marion County.

Her mother, who was running the staging business, had been staging homes with such attractive furniture that potential homeowners wanted to buy the furniture as well as the house. Furniture costs began to go up, so Harrison-Williams decided the smarter route would be to buy furniture at a wholesale price as a retailer.

And as she juggled dozens of balls in the air, offering drawings, building and decorating materials, design and remodeling services, she said, “You know what? We need a store.”

And Her Home Design boutique was born.

Her home offers furniture, accessories and gifts.

“Everything in the store is curated by credentialed designers who know what they are looking at, who knows all the specs of the furniture you’re looking at, who knows what works best for your space, instead of just selling furniture.”

It is important to her to have people with design degrees on staff (overall, she employs four designers, four decorators, a business operations manager, a lead project manager, two logistics managers and four carpenters), and she supplements her designers’ education by joining various design trade groups, bringing her staff to High Point Market every spring and fall, and having them take CEUs.

Her Home Design is located at 5502 W. 73rd Street, Indianapolis.
